Labor: International / Domestic
Corporations should be consistent in their responsibility and accountability to their employees and neighbors. Variations in corporate policies and standards of behavior based on regional or national differences should be reduced or eliminated. This concern is of particular significance when corporations have operations in counties that do not have well-developed infrastructures to monitor corporate behavior.
Many countries throughout the world (e.g.: China, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore) have poor labor policies. Each of these nations has been documented to have labor rights abuse cases. At the same time, many US
corporations have chosen to manufacture goods in these countries because of their low costs. When this occurs, and when we have determined that companies thus engaged are still eligible for investment, we will support resolutions that call on the company to improve working conditions for their employees in offshore facilities. We will also support resolutions to increase the amount of disclosure and reporting on the quality of working conditions in these countries.
We will support resolutions to promote equality in the workplace and will vote in favor of any recommendations for increased disclosure of corporate procedures in this area.
